According to his death cert, Mendel Kumetz had older brothers. Mendel Kumetz was the rabbi of Konskie, but did not officiate at her daughter's wedding with Moszek. Maybe Moszek learned to be a rabbi with Mendel?? Date of birth varies from 1780 to 1785.

According to Otzar Harabanim, born in 1787, Rabbi in Tomaszow and Konsk. Died 22 Shvat 1859.

I believe Szlama Hersz PIOTRKOWSKI is the same person as Szlama Hersz MANOWICZ ! His parents names are the same:

Theory of Dolores Ring:

Hi: I am sorry to have not been able to immediately get back to you. I don't have any proof, but this is my theory, based on the records.

I printed out the KUMETZ records. In addition to Ronia's marriage, I see the following marriages:

1844 M13 of Ruchla Racia, 16, daughter of Uszer and Frajdla BRANDEIS to Szlama Hersz PIOTRKOWSKI, 18, son of Icek and Sura GOLDBERG. This was the only record for his surname.

1849 M17 of Rajca, 20, daughter of Mendel and Dwoira to Szlama Hersz MANOWICZ, widower of 22 years, son of Icek Hersz and Sura [GOLDBERG, conjectured from the rest of that family data].

To have two Szlama Hersz's with virtually identical parents is highly suspicious. I think they are the same person.

Szlama Hersz MANOWICZ, as a widower of 22, may have had children. I do not have all the birth records. So far I have just indexed the births, nothing more. There is an 1852 D141 reference to Szlama, 26, son of Icek Hersz and Sura. The widow's name is not mentioned, nor were there children listed. I see no remarriage or death for his widow Rajca. It is thus possible that Rajca, daughter of Mendel and Dwoira did remarry to her sister's widower.

I'm sorry to say there is no proof in my files of the other towns, but I will keep looking. The microfilm for Konskie 1826-1859 is going to be in the library here for a few more weeks. Do you want copies from any of these things? Also I can send a little file of the names I have, if you want them. I don't see any births for the two late marriages, so I can't shed any light on that, except to say that many times births are registered a few years after they occurred.

There were brothers/sisters of Haya Gotheil in the UK. And another possibly to Canada.

The birth cert of Chaya which I received on dec 3, 1995, from Lodz archives states that her date of birth was May 3, 1874, instead of November 7, 1874 (which I got from ??).

Following a discussion with Rose in december 1995, I learn that there were Gotheil cousins in:

(1) Saint Galles, and/or Schafhausen, a brother of Chaya, who worked in "dentelles"

(2) Lyon, another brother, also selling "dentelle et soierie"

(3) New York (dentelle?)

(4) London, a brother

In Zurich there was a Gotheil family without connection to "our" Gotheil.

In november 1996, I met with the GOTHEIL family in Lyon. They have a soierie business. They will try to check the GOTHEIL connection in Saint Gal and Schafhausen.

Benny tells me that at the end of her life, Chaya lived in a home for old Jewish people in Brussels. The home had been created by Queen Elizabeth I, and was "untouchable" because the Queen was born Duchesse in Baviere, cousin of the Duc de Baviere. She was the spouse of Albert I, King of Belgium. Elizabeth had also created a home for Jewish children, and among the children were some friends of my father such as: Uri Najman, Jacques Dinovycz, the twins Leon and Adolphe Martinowski, Shimon Yurfest, Simon Flam, Joseph Tenser, Gaston Fuchs, Jacques Bursztyn.

Sept 99: Robert BAUM says that his father Mathias used to speak with Robert's daughter, Nathalie,

and told her that the GOTHEIL family was originally from Brandeburg, or the Brandeburg area.

Oct 2000: With Petje we discover at the archives that Haya and Itzhal-Meir had signed a pre-marital contract. I need to order this from the archives.

Bonne-maman was a happy woman. I remember her laughing loudly, playing cards with her polish friends or neighbors, telling me that the bird on the balcony brings luck (and a second bird then appeared). She also told me once that we all find a shoe for our foot (before I was married), that we all stand in line from beginning to the end and that she is getting closer and closer to the end. She loved to go to Paris, at the Moulin Rouge, enjoy life. She liked Belgium very much. When I once showed her the black and white pictures I just printed in the lab, she said "Now you have a real job, something I can understand!". We enjoyed drinking coffee together, in her small kitchen. She loved Michel very much.

She is buried in Holon near David Kronental ("I had the best years of my life with him, the last 15 years"), Gush 3, zone Aleph-1, line 12, place 33.

My father Benny tells me that Malka had yet another child, Jankele Rosen RYTEN, who was a singer (in France?). He was singing at weddings around 1946-47.

Rose raconte que les freres BAUM allaient tous a la yeshiva de Lodz, sauf Charles, que Maurice attachaient au pied d'une table (il avait un petit costume marin), car il ne voulait pas aller a la Yeshiva. Charles etait le plus jeune des freres males. Mania la plus jeune des soeurs. Charles

arrive a Bruxelles en 1925 ou il rejoint ses freres et soeurs Elias, Maurice, et Dora.

En 1957, emigre en Israel.
